So word's out that Unbound are in financial trouble. Report linked below includes official info, but I can add that it's been going on over a year. I've had two payments for Shareware Heroes delayed (but later paid) due to cashflow problems and now a third is overdue.

Causes that I know of are expected funding/investment evaporating last-minute, expansion plans not going as well as hoped, and shipping costs blowouts from war and COVID (which stung them because they charged shipping upfront for upcoming crowdfunded books, then costs doubled).

@MossRC so assuming that Unbound folds or has its IP sold for parts to another book company - do your book rights revert back to you?

@vga256 Yes, I now own the IP rights to Shareware Heroes. I'm putting the ebook up for sale on my own store as soon as I get around to create the sales page. I've not been able to recover the print design files, however, so if I want to do a proper new edition I'll probably have to design it from scratch.

@MossRC aw man, that is great to hear you got Shareware Heroes back! shame that you can't get the layout files.

fwiw, i designed the layouts for Mages & Modems using Scrivener and couldn't have been happier with the final product. somewhat finicky program to work with, but the output for print (and ebook) is perfect.

@vga256 Good to know, especially as Shareware Heroes was written in Scrivener. I learnt InDesign years ago, but don't want to give Adobe any money if I can avoid it. I've also tried Affinity Publisher a bit (I had planned to do a book repackaging of my podcast, but never finished it); it's decent but time-consuming to set up good templates.

@MossRC i was in the same boat with adobe too. I ended up doing the cover design in Affinity, which was perfect for the job. Scrivener's ability to compile to multiple formats (epub/print pdf/etc) is surprisingly well-implemented.

if you ever need help with affinity or scrivener, feel free to ping me. ran into a lot of their weird limitations/features over the past few years, after leaving adobe in the dust.
