Every time I play it, I'm struck by how beautifully The Settlers II balances its chill vibes and charming world with a complex-yet-intuitive economic simulation. I wrote about it at length in a retrospective for Eurogamer nearly 10 years ago. https://www.eurogamer.net/the-serene-interconnected-world-of-the-brilliant-the-settlers-2

@MossRC that's why I was really let down by a recently released game which was apparently inspired by the Settlers (the mechanics are there), but it has stressful gameplay which makes every small choice a headache since even selecting to build the wrong thing might mean a game over pretty soon.
@damianogerli Is that The Colonists (which I own but haven't played) or a different one? I've seen a bunch of others showing up on Steam and GOG since COVID started.
@MossRC it's DotAge, which has been in development by a single guy for like 8 years. I liked the idea of a roguelite strategy game where you have to restart and learn new mechanics, but it tries to do too many things at once and it gets confusing way too soon for me.
