after all this nonsense for the past couple of weeks, i remembered my first "real" 3d game engine that i learned on in the 00's

who else remembers Torque Game Engine/Torque3D? 😆

in the early 00's it was a huge, huge deal to have access to a fairly-easy-to-use 3d engine for building games. torque was absolutely decimated by Unity, and i assumed had disappeared soon afterward

boy was i wrong! T3D and T2D are still being updated under the MIT license 👏 absolutely astounding

GarageGames' Torque Game Engine website, circa 2004. It shows several games for sale, including Marble Blast Gold and Think Tanks.

@vga256 I made a bunch of one-level games in Torque 2D but didn't get around to doing anything bigger before the company started to struggle against Unity's great rise. I really liked using it — much more so than Unity.

@MossRC that was my experience as well. the overwhelming cry at the time was, "If Torque is so good, why's Marble Blast the only game anyone made with it?"

sad. it kinda sunk its boat. i loved that little engine.
