this month's goofy obscure recommendation for @thevglibrary :

"The King's Quest Companion" by Peter Spear.

Walkthroughs are written in the first by the author, reporter-style, for the first half of the book. the second half of the book has a more traditional step-by-step walkthrough.

of more interest are the last 50 pages, written as a surprisingly deep Encyclopedia of Daventry.

there are somewhat .. ah, adorably hobbyist... drawings and maps illustrated throughout that add a lot of charm.

1990, Osborne McGraw-Hill, Berkeley, CA

The front cover of The King's Quest Companion, by Peter Spears.

It covers games I-IV.

The art shows Princess Rosella, King Graham and a white unicorn in a verdant field, with a medieval castle in the background. The atmosphere is restful. A hand-drawn map of The land of Kolyma. It shows a hilly area, interspersed with trees. Dracula's Castle lies in the center of a Poisoned Lake. The rear cover copy for the book. It reads:

"The King's Quest Companion is an interesting blend of fiction and helpful information for playing my games. Anyone interested in reading the story behind King's Quest or who just needs to be 'unstuck' while playing the game will find this book invaluable."

@vga256 @thevglibrary Now looking for a copy. I love it when game guide books do something a bit different. The SimCity Planning Commission Handbook by Johnny Wilson (of CGW fame) is another great one in that regard — it has an in-depth guide to how real cities around the world are laid out (and why), then shows you how to recreate the different styles in-game.

@MossRC @vga256 How did I not know about this SimCity book!?

Thanks so much for sharing @MossRC!

Have officially catalogued into The Video Game Library:

@thevglibrary @vga256 I'm sure I told you about it at some point. I have the original edition (sans "Classic" in the title), published in January 1990, shortly after the PC port came out.

@MossRC @vga256 Nice! Yes, catalogued that edition as well:

(sans "Official" and "Classic")

@vga256 @thevglibrary Bautiful! 😍 Much better representation of the actual games than the other editions I’ve seen (those covers were too colorful and “shouty”).

@eobet i'd like a copy of the newer ones myself - i'm fascinated that they kept expanding it for the new games :)

@MossRC @thevglibrary i wish i could say that this is anywhere near as good as the Commission Handbook... but then again, what is? :)

@thevglibrary @MossRC and while we're here: there really isn't any better SimCity strategy guide on the planet than the SimCity 2000: Power, Politics and Planning guide. it's massive, complex, and has several chapters dedicated to the code/data models underlying the game systems, and interviews with the developers. one of the best obscure discoveries i made a few years ago:

https://archive.org/details/sim-city-2000-power-politics-and-planning-revised-edition-strategy-guide/mode/2up

@vga256 @thevglibrary I've had that on my bookshelf for a while but haven't had a chance to read it yet. SimCity 2000 is one of my favourite games, so if the book's really that good then I am going to love it.

@MossRC @thevglibrary the first 2/3 is standard SC2k tips and tricks - and suddenly the last third becomes a "how sc2k was made" with surprisingly in-depth interviews with the entire team
